Why a swing goes higher when you pump

You already know how. You lean back and stick your legs out as you drop through the bottom, then fold forward and tuck them under as you sail up the far side, and the arc grows a little each pass until the chains go slack at the top and your stomach drops. Every child learns this by feel, in an afternoon, with no theory at all, and every child is doing exactly the right thing. There is no folk error here waiting to be corrected. What follows is not a but actually. It is only the mechanism, opened up a little, because the plainest playground fact turns out to run on something worth seeing.

Start with the puzzle that isn't obvious until you look for it: where does the extra height come from? A swing is a pendulum, and a pendulum left alone only ever gives back the height you started it from — it will not climb on its own, ever, no matter how long you wait. You are not being pushed by anything. No one is behind you. The chains are just chains. And yet the arc grows. The energy is coming from you, out of your own legs and back, and the whole trick is not in how hard you pull but in when — in raising and lowering your own body at the two moments of the swing when raising and lowering cost and pay differently.

Here is the hinge. Think of the standing version, where you rise up straight through the bottom and squat down at the ends; it is the same physics as the seated lean, only easier to see. At the bottom of the arc you are moving fastest, and a body whipping through the bottom of a curve is pressed down harder than its own weight — the seat pushes up on you more than gravity alone would ask, the way you feel heavy at the bottom of a dip in the road. That is the expensive moment, and it is exactly the moment you choose to stand up, to haul your center of mass upward against that extra press. It costs you real work. Then at the top of the arc, where you hang still for an instant and weigh a touch less than usual, you squat back down — and you get back less than you spent, because you are lighter there. Rise where you are heavy, sink where you are light, and the books don't balance: each pass you have poured a little muscle-work into the swing and taken less back out. That surplus is the height. You are lifting yourself at the price the bottom charges and being refunded at the top's cheaper rate, and pocketing the difference as altitude, over and over, twice every trip.

Which is why the timing is the whole art and the effort is almost beside it. Pump at the right beats — up through the bottom, down at the ends — and every stroke adds. Pump on the wrong beats and you don't merely fail to help; you feed the swing backward, spending your work to drain its arc, and it dies under you as surely as it grew. The swing has a rhythm of its own, set before you ever climbed on, and your legs are not the engine so much as a valve: all they do is open at the moments the swing's own motion has made cheap or dear, and let energy trickle in or out. The child who has "got it" has not gotten stronger. They have gotten their body into step with a clock the swing was already keeping.

Two honest edges, because the playground is rounder than the diagram. The first: that clock is not perfectly steady. A pendulum's beat depends on its length — the distance from the bar down to where your weight really sits — and for small swings that beat barely cares how wide the arc is, which is the lovely near-miracle that lets you match it without thinking. But push the arc up toward the horizontal and the beat stretches, each big pass taking a hair longer than the small ones did, so the rhythm you have to keep drifts slightly slower as you climb. The good swinger adjusts without ever knowing they are doing it. The rule rise-at-the-bottom, sink-at-the-top holds exactly; the tempo it has to keep loosens as the arc grows.

The second edge is the one that matters, and it is the plain limit hiding under all this: you cannot pump the swing faster. You can only pump it higher. The beat belongs to the length of the chains and to where you carry your weight, and to almost nothing you can do with your legs — pump like a fury and the swing will not hurry its stroke, it will only widen it. Everything your effort earns is amplitude; the pace is not yours to set. Shorten the chains and the swing quickens whether you like it or not; lengthen them and it slows, and no amount of wanting speeds it up. So the swing is one of the few machines where trying harder and trying faster come apart cleanly. Effort buys you the size of the arc. The rhythm you do not buy at all — you find it, already running, and fall into step, and your reward for obedience is height.

So there is nothing here to have been wrong about. The thing you did at six was correct and the reason it worked is exactly the reason you'd guess if you sat and thought: you were putting energy in with your own body. What's left, once there is no error to overturn, is only the shape of the bookkeeping — that the energy goes in not by force but by phase, by lifting yourself when the swing has made you heavy and lowering yourself when it has made you light, twice a pass, forever if your legs held out; and that the tempo of the whole thing was never yours to hurry, only yours to keep. You do not drive the swing. You feed a rhythm you did not set, at the two moments each cycle when feeding it pays, and the swing turns your timing into height.
