Why a traffic jam has no cause
You have spent hours of your life you will not get back crawling toward the source of a jam that turned out not to be there. The traffic thickens, stalls, drips forward a car length, stalls again, and while you sit you build a picture of what must be ahead — an accident, a breakdown, a lane pinched shut around cones nobody is working near — because a jam this stubborn must have a cause, and the cause must be up front, where the cars finally break free and the road opens. Then you reach the front. There is nothing there. The road simply widens back into motion, the car ahead accelerates away toward a horizon that was never blocked, and you are released for no reason you can point to. You were not held up by an obstacle. You were held up by the jam itself, which needed no obstacle, and which — this is the part worth sitting with — had been travelling toward you the entire time.
The intuition almost everyone carries is that a traffic jam is an event with an address: something happens at a place, and cars stack up behind it. Sometimes that is exactly right. A real crash, a real merge, a real steep hill — these are jams that sit where their cause sits, and clear when it clears. But the commonest kind, the phantom that clots a busy motorway on a clear dry afternoon with no accident and no roadworks anywhere on the map, has no such address. It is not a thing on the road at all. It is a pattern in the flow, and above a certain density the flow grows patterns like this on its own, out of nothing but its own crowdedness and the ordinary, unavoidable imperfection of the people driving.
Here is how nothing becomes a jam. Below a critical density the road is forgiving: one driver lifts off the accelerator a moment, the car behind eases back, the small disturbance spreads out and dies. But pack the cars closer and the same road turns unstable. Now when one driver eases off — reaching for a coffee, drifting a little near a gentle bend, no reason that would ever make the news — the driver behind, who cannot react instantly and who wants a margin of safety, brakes a touch harder than the car ahead did. The one behind them brakes harder still. The small lift becomes a firmer tap becomes a genuine stop, each driver's reaction delay amplifying the last, and the deceleration ripples backward down the line, growing as it goes. What began as one person's half-second of inattention becomes a wall of stopped cars — a stop-and-go wave — that rolls upstream, against the direction of travel, at a stubbornly consistent speed of something like fifteen or twenty kilometres an hour. Cars pour into the back of the wave, crawl through it, and spill out the front, but the wave does not move with them. It holds its shape and keeps grinding backward through an ever-changing crowd of strangers, long after the driver who first lifted off has arrived home and forgotten the coffee.
You do not have to take this on faith, because the thing has been built in the open. In 2008 a team of Japanese physicists led by Yuki Sugiyama put around twenty cars on a single-lane circular track and asked the drivers to do the one thing that ought to make jams impossible: hold a steady speed, keep even spacing, go round and round. There was no bottleneck. There could not be one — the track was a closed ring with nothing on it but cars told to cruise. For a little while the flow held. Then it didn't. A jam condensed out of the smooth stream all by itself, purely from the drivers' inability to hold a perfectly constant speed, and once formed it slid backward around the ring exactly as the theory said it would, a clot of stopped cars migrating against the traffic while the traffic poured through it. Mathematicians have since given these self-made waves a name — jamitons — borrowed from the detonation waves that travel through explosives, because the equations rhyme: a sharp front that sustains itself and propagates on its own, feeding on the medium it moves through.
I should be honest about two edges of this. The first is that the wrong answer here is not quite the tidy schoolroom error the object-lessons usually overturn — nobody is formally taught that jams have causes; it is a folk certainty, the story your own frustration writes for you at the back of the queue. The second is that density is doing real work in the setup: below the critical threshold the identical twitch of the identical distracted driver simply damps away, and no jam forms. The phantom is not causeless in the sense that anything at all could trigger it anywhere. It is causeless in the sense that no particular cause is needed — that once the road is full enough, the trigger is ambient, always present, indistinguishable from ordinary driving, and the search for the specific villain up front is a category error. You are looking for an object where there is only a condition.
What is settled is the reversal. We picture the jam as a thing that happens to the drivers — an obstacle they are victims of, sitting somewhere ahead. Mostly it is nothing of the kind. The jam is a thing the drivers are, collectively and without consent, a shape their small independent imperfections make together that not one of them intends and not one of them, boxed in their own car, can see. It has no location because it is not in any of the cars; it is in the spacing between them. It outlives every driver who passes through it. You join the back of it, you crawl, you are let go at the front, and the jam you were briefly a part of is still there behind you in the mirror, still grinding backward through a fresh stream of strangers, each of them certain there is something up ahead.
